Recognising the Intricacies of Anger

Anger and stress are elusive and wait in the background of our experiences remaining hidden until BANG, they appear, quick and dramatic like a bolt of lightning when the trigger appears. That is the reality of what we are dealing with when it comes to anger and stress.

Considering that analogy, we can easily understand that applying techniques, such as box breathing, to stop reacting is futile. They just don’t have the power behind them to work. It’s a bit like standing in front of a train. There’s only going to be one winner, every time.

At Anger and Stress Management SOS we don’t waste any time in teaching techniques that don’t work, instead we investigate what is going on in the background. In other words, we head to the root of the problems and make the changes there.

There are various strategies we have developed to do this, but a key element to this is recognising how we protect ourselves emotionally and intentionally through our behaviour. Blaming others is a key blocking technique and a strategy for anger to hide itself, because if it is never our fault then the problem is never our responsibility. We remain blameless and of course anger persists whilst our relationships fall apart.

We can identify our self-protection strategies by thinking of them as a mask. That which helps us to hide the things about ourselves that we don’t want others to see, and want we want them to believe. Although our masks are a way of protecting ourselves, they are ultimately like a fortress in which we have unwittingly imprisoned ourselves and cannot see beyond. In unmasking we begin to liberate ourselves, one brick at a time, from our prison and recognise that we don’t need protection after all.

We have identified over 40 masks which people adopt as ways of thinking and behaving and we ask clients to identify the main ones which they adopt. That is like removing the first block from the wall. Moving forward the walls come down brick by brick until nothing remains.
