Stress is a huge problem for many people. It is a fight flight response which is experienced in the mind and the body and is a common trigger for anger and anxiety. When Stress manifests physically it can cause chronic illness and even death and emotionally it can ruin personal and working relationships.
The causes of stress are not as we imagine, i.e. the various situations where we may feel stressed. The real causes of stress are actually in the mind and are caused by previous experiences of overwhelm when a situation has felt out of our control, emotionally and/ or physically.
If we reflect upon our emotional state when we have been stressed, what is it that happens? One’s clarity of thought, reason and emotional balance go out of the window, and instead we feel desperate or angry, emotionally impaired and unable to reason. It is as if we are in the centre of an catastrophic hurricane and don’t know what to do or which way to turn. In other words, we feel overwhelmed, and we don’t like it.
To overcome stress, we have to regain self-control, but is it really possible when we are stressed out in the moment? No, not really, because when the fight, flight, freeze response has kicked in then it’s difficult to control and reduce the spiraling negative emotions, feelings and the resultant actions, with rationality. Therefore, we have to overcome stress by understanding it thoroughly and coming to grips with the causes of it retrospectively, and we do this via The Self Cycle System.
When we shine the light of awareness and understanding on stress and its causes, we can gain insight into the process. Getting to the root of the causes, which may not be so blatantly obvious, is also part of what we do too. When we start to recognise what is going on in our self-cycle, we will naturally begin to let go of the stress response, as the mind begins to understand that there is no need for it to keep us from harm.
Taking personal responsibility for one’s reactions and emotions is an essential part of the process and there is a point where we come to understand that it is not the people or situations which stress us out. Instead, we recognise it as part of a process, associated with negative experiences of the past as well as those in the present, which keep re-emerging like an echo. With this understanding we are able to work indirectly on stress and reduce it to nothing.
